Rights for publication - What does that mean?

I need an advice. I'm offered to be the photographer of a publication on a freelance basis and I'm asked to determine my price. In relation to that, the woman also says that the rights of publication will remain with the publication she is leading, but I will be credited for each photo.

What does it mean? I've looked around (on the net) but I still don't get the hang of it. When I wrote for the other publications, there was a statement letter saying that the rights of the photos stay with me but I'm allowing them to use them in their publication. That means a license, right? What I get from this recent offer to me reads differently. Does that mean that I cannot do anything about them anymore once they've taken up the rights?

It's not that I have a problem with it. A commission work is a commission work. But that will determine the price whether it should go higher or not.

Dont you think?

mba carla...dari yg sudah2 saya baca...jadi hak cipta tetap d mba carla tapi hak untuk memakai dan publikasi di tangan yg memberi order..nah biasanya itu kek kontrak..jadi pada saat masa kontrak habis maka bisa di nego lagi kalo foto itu masih mau di pakai untuk jangka waktu tertentu...biasanya di lomba2 foto ketentuannya begitu...foto pemenang di kontrak selama jangka waktu tertentu,ongkosnya ya dari nominal hadiah tersebut, tp jika jangka waktunya habis dan fotonya masih dipakai berarti nego lagi untuk harganya.... :D

ic. akhirnya aku baru nulis balik ke dia sih definisi rights disini maksudnya apa. lebih baik jelas dari awal kan daripada ntar2 repot.

btw.. aku mau berhenti dari kerjaanku yg sekarang ini dan fokus ke fotografi. lagi bikin pricelist tapi susah juga. :D kamu biasa ambil orderan gitu ga? kalo iya yang seperti apa (wedding, products, what?)

It reads like that to me, too - they seem to be buying sole publication rights, so you can't sell another licence to another publication. Correspondingly you should charge a good deal more! Probably at least three times as much - if they don't like that price, offer them sole publication rights for a limited time, with the rights to revert to you after a period, say a year (or two or three - great opportunity there for negotiation!)

oyah? wow kerennn :D iya skarang ak juga dah off dari kerjaan kantoran, fokus di foto juga :) i love prewed and wedding, but i did lots of portrait lately... i'd love to try products...it's a new challenge :D
